Sun in the middle of night

Lapland is a province in Finland which has total area 98,946 km² and population inhabitants 187,777 (2002). Rovaniemi is the capital city of this province which has a beautiful unique phenomenon to look at that is sun in middle of night.

Lapland located on the polar circumference, each year this province sunlit all day within two months. This phenomenon is called midnight sun.

This phenomenon occurs every June and July that offer travelers to see the unique light of midnight sun, which does not restrict between day and night. This allows you to hiking at night or do golf exercise for 24 hours.

Besides golf in midnight, other popular tourist activity in Lapland is skiing in Riskgransen, which is the most northerly ski resort in Europe. Unlike other ski resorts in Europe, Riksgransen not have freezing temperatures, so the ski lovers should not be afraid with cold due to the midnight sun phenomenon which makes the sun keep shining that makes this area stay warm and still have snow for skiers skating.

Lapland is also the home for the first and largest ice hotel in the world. In this hotel, you will sleep between ices chunks that covered by bedding made from deerskin. Some of property like candle, chair and table in this hotel is made it from ice.

The hotel was built in 1989, in Jukkasjarvi small village by the local ice sculptor. Usually it is open in winter only. Special for this year, they open also in summer. As always, the water to make ice cubes are derived from TorneRiver, not far from the hotel.

Rovaniemi Attractions

Rovaniemi city has lush green surroundings and dense forests all around the sea and other water bodies. Today it is known as tourist attraction with many people visiting every year for the experience of Christmas and Santa Claus. The area is populated with many hotels and Log cabins in the centre of town and on the outskirts. Some of Rovaniemi’s great attractions include Jatkankynttila bridge which has an external flame over the Kemijoki river. Rovaniemi town hall is another great attraction and so is Lppia house which is a concert hall, Theatre and congress centre.

Every year in kemi a large snow castle with an Ice Hotel is built. Rovaniemi is a place from where one can see the Aurora Borealis. Tourists often enjoy the reindeer sleighs trips with Sami drivers, or in dog sleighs.

Skiing is also a great option here, with downhill resorts at Levi and Saariselka. There are several cross country ski tracks throughout the northern part of Finland.
